May Festivals in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The May festivals are, together with the Tenerife Carnival, the most important dates in the calendar of the city of Santa Cruz, as May marks the anniversary of the founding of the city, inaugurated on 3 May, 1494, which, since that day, has been celebrated as a local public holiday on which the city is adorned with flower crosses and the main streets are filled with the rhythm of folk music.
To enjoy the festival in all its glory, it´s best to explore the city centre’s most historic and prominent spots like the Plaza de la Candelaria or Plaza de España, where, from the night of 2 May, elaborate tables are set out and decked with traditional dishes from all the Islands and local wine is available to refresh the hundreds of local people who come dressed in colourful folk costume to celebrate the city´s birthday.
Apart from the eating, drinking and singing, old local traditional Canarian games are also held, like Canarian wrestling or “juego del palo” Canarian stick fighting, as well as other sports competitions at the city´s sports centres.
Although 3 May is a local holiday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it´s also a festival in Puerto de la Cruz, and similar activities are also held throughout the month in towns around the Island, (in La Orotava on 15 May or in the south, in Arona on 18 May). All this leads up to an even greater festival that is celebrated on all the islands on 30 May, Canaries Day. Festivals are then held in every Canarian town, but especially in Candelaria, home to the Patron of the Canary Islands.
